These cars were converted from the first class ends of AB cars in the number group 50 - 68 for the Nth East SG construction project. They had 6 shower cubicles and 6 washbasins supplied by 4 x 100 gallon roof mounted tanks. Inside the car was a "14D Ideal Boiler" which fed into a 200 gallon storage tank. |
This 1959 view shows WS 2 upon conversion.

It appears that there has been a fire in the boiler requiring some panel replacement.

Research has discovered that this interesting piping arrangement was part of a device designed to dump
the water from the tanks before the car was moved. The small pipe going down the end of the car was
connected to the brake pipe, when the device on the roof sensed brake pipe pressure it opened a valve to dump
the water through the large pipe on the side of the car. It appears that this modification was applied
to all WS's except WS 2.
